linux-wlan-ng on Mandrake 9.2 problem

Hi

I recently moved from RH9 to Mandrake 9.2. I have a prism 2.5 based D-Link DWL520 wireless card. I built the linux-wlan-ng driver. The compilation and installation went on without any issues.

Mandrake was using orinoco_pci module which I removed and loaded the prism2_pci modules.

$modprobe prism2_pci

/lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o.gz: init_module: Operation not permitted
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o.gz failed

I also created a ifcfg-wlan0 file in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ directory

$ifconfig -a

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt:17 Memory:d08fc000-d08fd000

Then I edited the wlancfg-SSID and the wlan.conf files in the /etc/wlan directory. I set alias prism2_pci wlan0 in the modules.conf file. I issued the following commands

wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid="J's Properties" authtype=sharedkey
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11WEPDefaultKey0=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11WEPDefaultKeyID=0

and all of them returned a success message.

then i restarted the network services

/sbin/service network restart

and my wlan0 came up OK but I was unable to ping any IP or browse the net. But my ifconfig shows

Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:05:5D:EE:66:C1
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:317 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:24 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:36851 (35.9 Kb) TX bytes:432 (432.0 b)
Interrupt:17 Memory:d08fc000-d08fd000

shows some Tx/Rx activity on wlan0!!!!!!

Is there anything that I am missing or that I need to know? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The card is working fine on my windows boot though. I even tried to set resolv.conf to point to the DNS servers. yet nothing changed.

I hope someone already went through the same issues with Mandrake 9.2.

thanks,
Krishna

Hello,

yeah, I think you missed to call for an IP Adress.

first you have to take your wlan0 adapter into the ifconfig programm:

ifconfig wlan0 up

then you may list first your awailable accesspoints, if there's noone, you can't connect either.

iwlist wlan0 scanning

if an accesspoint exists, you can now ask for an IP

dhclient wlan0 up

after that it should work!

Greets,
Rocco

I am currently in the same scenario. I am trying to get my Mandrake 9.2 to work with a Dlink DWL-520 (non +). It is detected, but there is an issue which has been mentioned here in past posts.

Something about error in line 61 or a prm file. How do i rememdy this? I am still getting my way through understanding Linux so if you could give me any info as if i were an idoit! Which i feel like.
