Linksys WPC54G install Debian

Hello all -

I am running Debian Sarge with a 2.6.8 kernel. I have just tried to install my wireless card and everything went great right up to the point that I actually tried using it. When I tried to connect wirelessly, nothing happened. Any suggestions?

Could you be a little more specific? What driver are you using, a native Linux driver or ndiswrapper? How are you starting the interface, and what error messages do you get?

Welcome to LQ.

Also make sure you start with all firewalls and WEP-WPA encryption turned off. Once you get the wireless working then you can add your firewall and whatever encryption you choose.

Sorry about any lack of specifics. I was trying to be very specific, guess I lost a couple details in the works.

I am using ndiswrapper with the Windows driver for my Linksys WPC54G card. I didn't get any error messages when I installed it and set everything up. There is a tutorial on the ndiswrapper site that I followed without any problems.

When I first brought the card up with ifconfig, it didn't get an IP address. But running dhclient gave it an address that is valid to my wireless network.

Here is the one thing that I can think of: I was running a 2.4.27 kernel and was going to install ndiswrapper from source. But I got lost on the aforementioned web page and decided to install it automatically using aptitude. Since aptitude tries to take care of dependencies, it decided I needed to upgrade to the 2.6.8 kernel. But everything ran fine at that point.

Okay, I tried turning off WEP encryption. When I bring the wireless card up with

Code:
iwconfig wlan0 up
The 'link' light on my card blinks a couple of times, but then does nothing. Doing this gives me no IP address, but I can get that if I type

Code:
dhclient wlan0
I again get a little blink. This gives me an IP address, but still no connectivity.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Are you going to a router or WAP? Is the router/wap using WEP WPA or WEP-WPA? Try setting security to none or clear on the access point.

What does running iwconfig say?

I am running a router using WEP. However...

I don't know what exactly changed but wireless is now working! Oh the relief.

On to bigger and better things.
