specifically, what version of the adapter is it? As I found out from my own experience Fedora has the atmel driver already installed for most, maybe all of the usb adapters (not sure about 2.8) In the case that it does, you don't have to download, untar, and make the driver. So do you have to do? Try booting the computer without the usb adapter unplugged. Then after it is loaded up, log in as root as type lsmod (LSMOD lowercase), plug in the adapter, and look for a line something like "usbcore <spaces> atmel<and a bunch of version numbers>. If you get here, post the contents of lsmod.
