"Link not ready" after wireless network fully configured

After fully configuring the wireless network using an Atmel card (which worked in the past), whenever I try to bring up eth1 (the wireless) it complains about "Link not ready". Note, the wireless card has the proper essid, channel, and ap information, as well as mode (configured via iwconfig) and can see the network (confirmed by iwlist). How can I get it to associate with the network properly?
