Kubuntu 8.04 & Broadcom 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g

I've already posted on this subject (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...u-8.04-650420/), but have done quite a bit of messing around and thought it would be wise starting all over.

I've recently tried following these instructions: http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=186622
... but have had no luck getting things working.

This is what I get when I do iwconfig:
jc@jeje:~$ iwconfig
Code:

lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

wmaster0  no wireless extensions.

wlan0    IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed  Channel:0  Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=0 dBm
          Retry min limit:7  RTS thr:off  Fragment thr=2346 B
          Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0  Missed beacon:0

jc@jeje:~$

For additional information, see that first link in this post.

I'm new to Linux and have been trying to solve this problem for months!

Could somebody please help me?

I'd be prepared to do this via msn...

Many thanks.

If you're using Kubuntu, then use the network manager (KNetworkManager). Much easier. Chances are Ubuntu has already done much of the work you are attempting manually.

Look on the task bar for it, otherwise you can fire it up from the command line, or from the System Setting screen.

The network manager will give you a dialog that will give you a lot of graphical tools for configuration. You'll even get the bar graph that shows signal strength.

Another cool thing with Ubuntu is that it lets you save a network configuration by name. That way, you can have a home configuration, a office setup, one for the road, etc.

Wireless debugging

If you haven't already done so, you might try capturing the output of dmesg to a file, as in: dmesg > filename

You might find error messages contained in the output are helpful in diagnosing the problem.

restart
ifconfig wlan0 up

Cheers

You might wish to note that if the Broadcom needs its BIOS flashed with fwcutter dmesg will not only indicate that, but provides the link address to download it, in Hardy.

Can someone please link the firmware flash for the BCM4306 wireless NIC? I've been messing with this for a couple of days. I saw that link at one point yesterday and I can't get seem to find it again.
Thanks!
