kernel mismatch for atmel chipset

I have a atmel at76c505 chipset and i compiled and installed atmelwlandriver with no errors, but it is not listed in the lsmod when the usb adapter is plugged in.
modprobe usb* shows:
kernel-module version mismatch
lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel.drivers/usb/usbvnet5.o: was compiled for kernel version 2.4.20-8custom while this kernel is version 2.4.20-8
I did a recompilation of kernel last time, but uname -r still shows 2.4.20-8
how to get rid of this error ?

i managed to install the driver on 2.6.2 kernel , but when i plugged the adapter ( USB) in , lsmod didn't list the module. when i modprobe usb* it says FATAL: MOdule usb* not found. usb devices r working fine ( mice, memory stick)
running winter says "no devices found"
what should i do?
