iwlist scan - no scan results

I took the antenna off my wireless card to move and since I've put it back on the card has been unable to pick up a signal. When I run sudo iwlist scan it hangs for a second then reports
Code:

wlan0    No scan results
when I run iwconfig I get
Code:

wlan0    IEEE 802.11bg  ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=17 dBm

Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0

However the LED on the back of the wireless card is green.

Any help and advice on how to test things would be appreciated. I'm not sure what to do and confused why the card won't pick up a signal.

verdeboy2k 05-24-2009 04:35 PM

I assume that the card was working just fine in linux before your moved your pc. If that is the case, have you checked to make sure that the card hasn't come loose from its PCI slot? It might have shifted just enough to be detected by your computer, but not be seated firmly enough to work properly. (I have had this happen before :) ).

compu73rg33k 05-24-2009 09:29 PM

I just tried resetting the card in the motherboard and then booted up on a live CD. The wireless worked! I thought this had solved my problem, but then I restarted back into my installation on my harddrive, and unfortunately the wireless still would not scan.

So the card definitely works it's some messed up setting on my current 9.04 installation on my harddrive.

compu73rg33k 05-25-2009 04:29 PM

I just tried reinstalling ubuntu and when I started back up the wireless still didn't work. There's a red X over the wireless strength bar signal. I tried restarting into the live CD again because it worked last time I booted into wireless CD and it still didn't work. Makes me wonder why it worked the first time!?

I tried swapping the wireless card out with another I had in a different computer and the result is the same. It won't scan for networks! Is there some setting to block scanning or connecting to a network or something?

compu73rg33k 05-25-2009 11:51 PM

I booted from a Ubuntu 8.10 CD and the wireless worked. I upgraded to 9.04 and the wireless stopped working again. I noticed that it was now using the ath5k module in 9.04 instead of ath_pci from 8.10. I edited my /etc/modules.d/ath_pci-blacklist.conf and commented the line to blacklist ath_pci and instead blacklisted ath5k. I ran rmmod ath5k and modprobe ath_pci and the wireless instantly connected to my wireless network.

I tried reinstalling my old wireless card and it did not work with the ath_pci module, nor the ath5k module, nor the rt61pci module which is the module I believe it should be using (this was loaded when I ran 8.10).

Here's the lshw -class network from my 9.04 installation:

You need to follow this HOWTO I believe to use the RT61 wireless chipset in Ubuntu. At least it can't hurt.
