I've followed the documentation and installed ndiswrapper 1.1. It reports that the driver is installed and that the hardware is present.

Next I use iwconfig to configure the card

Code:

iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed
iwconfig wlan0 key resctricted XXXXXXXX
iwconfig wlan0 essid XXXXXXXX

Then I run iwconfig to check the config. Everything is fine except the essid which still says off/any. Running iwconfig wlan0 scan shows my wireless router.

Why can't I set the essid?

What if you try setting the essid with quotes around it?

yup I had that same problem, it only worked when i set the key to open, not restricted, but it SHOULD be restricted I think.
Nothing I tried worked and eventually I got so annoyed that I just took off ndiswrapper, I'm going to try it again tonight.

One of the frustrating things I found was that I could only see my router now and then with iwlist, the signal strength was very low, even though I was only 2 feet away from it..

Also, my neighbours have access points as well as I could see these every now and then - the signal strength from these was low too - Does anyone know if there's some way i can get iwlist to ignore these routers so I can concentrate on my own pitiful access point?

Your post prompted me to have a poke around my router's config and I noticed that the authenication type was set to open. Unsurprisely changing restricted to open with iwconfig worked.

Now I can get rid of driverloader

Mine's all loaded up and (kind of) working now too. Lots of tweaking to do though.
