Ipw2200 wireless will not "Activate" on HP NC8000 laptop

(FYI---treat me like the Linux-n00b that I am.
Over the past 5 or so years I've done a handful of installs (mostly Redhat) but am a Windows/PC network admin by trade)

I've got an HP NC8000 laptop (1.7ghz CPU, 40gig HDD, 1gig Ram) running a dual-boot of Windows XP Pro and Fedora Core 3.

The initial install of Fedora Core 3 was kernel 2.6.9-1.667 which detected the WIRED lan adapter (Broadcom)---but did NOT auto-detect my wireless. (the Intel 2200)

Once I got Fedora up and running---I completed taking all the "up2date" updates.....Now I have kernel 2.6.10-1.770_FC3 and upon reboot it detected my Wireless network card.

I've updated the wireless driver to version 1.0.2 (which I got here--> h t t p : / /i p w 2 2 0 0 . s o u r c e f o r g e . n e t / ), I've also downloaded the latest 0.19 firmeware and dropped it in /lib/firmware. ( h t t p : / / 0 h 1 . c o m / n o d e / 2 4 6 )

Everything SEEMS to be correct, if I input the SSID and my WEP key, the wireless appears to associate with the access point (the MAC address changes from all ZERO's to the correct numbers) ---but it wont grab a DHCP address. You can see a screenshot here-->
http://www.aberrantreality.com/Images/Screenshot.png

If I look in the network configurator, it says the wireless "eth1" is not activated. If I try to activate it, I get an error that it cannot be activated.

If Anyone would like to help me get this up and running--I would be eternally grateful. Through the forum, emails or IM chat ---I have no preference...

Thank You Linux Community!!!!

only running IPv6 ???

OK..so I think I found the problem....

My wireless ("eth1") is only running IPv6.....NOT IPv4....

Is that the problem?...how do I correct it?

In Fedora you should have a check box in the editing of your Ethernet device's config. Boy, been a while since I've dealt with the wonder of Fedora. Should say allow IPV6 connection. If any other problems post back I'm sure someone more familiar with Fedora can help you out.

If I disable IPv6...my wireless adapter/connection disappears all-together (like its not there--nowhere)

if I re-able IPv6....I'm back where I started...it associates with the wirelss access point--but wont grab an IP

PS--I've wiped and redone my dual-boot....maybe I jacked up a driver or setting--going to start from scratch and be careful(er)

Try #dhcpcd eth* * = whatever your ethernet device is recognized as. Should grab an ip address for you, if not, it's beyond my scope.

Hope this helps,

on the front right corner (just under your right wrist if you have your fingers on the home row of the keyboard) is a series (5) lights. the far left light (looks like a lollipop with ears) should be lit and blue. if not, push the button with the matching picture up by the power button. :c)

Thanks SOpsMattW, but that was one of the first things I checked.

I am HP certified to do hardware repairs on alot of the HP laptops..and did support for them for various years,
however it was all Windows and no Linux.

IPW 2200BG not activated upon power up

I installed no problem with the internal card by RPMS in atrpms.net. I use Kernel 770. I have the same problem that I can't activate the card upon power up - there was SET BIT ERROR during initialization. After the FC3 is up I can manully activate my card through Network.

I use IPV4. Any input is welcome.

Jon
