iPhone 3G - Bluetooth Internet Tethering with Ubuntu 8.04
I'm trying to tether my iPhone with Ubuntu 8.04 via Bluetooth. How do I resolve this error -- "Couldn't display "obex://XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX/". Error host is down. Please select another viewer and try again. ??
The way I understand this, you need a fixed or known IP on your phone wifi, and a mobile connection. Tethering allows your pc to run using the phone as a local server, or as a proxy, and the internet connection will be your phone's mobile connection. There could be a fair bit of setup in that. Funny thing is, you usually get ripped off for internet on your mobile.
So how do I resolve this error -- "Couldn't display "obex://XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX/". Error host is down. Please select another viewer and try again. ??
Google it first.
I haven't done this yet (I have a 5Mbps connection) but the basic idea is that your phone has a fixed or known IP. Can your laptop ping that IP?
My Android based phone tethers
1. Via USB cable
2. Via an application
So your phone takes the place of the modem/router in your standard setup. Fine, except most phones don't know they are routers and have to be told. What's your phone?
Google does help - "Couldn't display "obex://XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX/" is what bluetooth says when it's not working.Get your laptop and phone connected with bluetooth. Forget my last post. Have a hunt on xda-developers.com forums. Search for 'iphone tethering'

I enabled the "Network" service in Blueman, selected my iPhone PAN Network Access Profile, enabled DHCP, disconnected from my WiFi access point and VOILA!!! I'm online!!
The Linux forums are great!! Glad to be part of the revolution!!!
