internet problems
 

I just setup fedora c2 and the ethernet card was working fine. I used it today on campus at school, but when I brought it home and plugged it into my network, it wouldn't detect any internet and a light does not even come up on my router. I know the connection is there because I booted into xp and it works fine. Any ideas?? I messed around with the settings and tried to create new internet connections, but none work. I'm kinda new to linux so any help would be appreciated. Also does anyone know how to install wireless on fedora?? I have looked around for drivers for intel 2200 b/g but can't find any. wireless access would be nice. preferrably drivers that are RF monitor compatible...thanks for the help....

maybee your network card isn't supported by linux:confused: try geeting drivers from the maufacurus website. but i guess there whould still be an active link tho. but try it all the same.

Do you know whether you can get anything from the ethernet card.

Plugging into one network (on campus) then at home would suggest it is something outside of the OS. Can you ping other things on the network like the router?
Are you using dynamic DNS settings on campus and require DNS servers at home?
Does syslog report any failures when pinging, accessing websites?

i'd like to add to what you said. yes do what he said but also check your network cable maybe linux is more sensitive to cable differences such as a long cable.

I am having a similar problem, I am writing to you in windows because I can get on both my home and college network on it. Last time I came here, I could get linux to run on it too, but now I can't. It will successfully activate eth0, but the internet won't work. It will behave like it is not connected. Also it gives me a repeated error message "/etc/firestarter/firewall.sh: No Such File or Directory". I've looked everywhere but I can't find where it is calling for that, I had firestarter installed but I got mad at it and deleted it all. I configure my firewall manually now through iptables.

Can someone help?

My problem is a little different......for some reason Fedora loaded my NIC as a Broadcom 5405 and it is really a 440x. It worked in Fedora the first time I got on the internet (at school), but then I brought it home and plugged it it and it hasn't worked since. I messed around with the config and tried to install the 440x driver, but just got errors compiling and i don't know enough about linux to know how to go about fixing the problem. One thing I don't understand is that when I tried to install another network device, it only listed about 30 different NICs and didn't even ask to install from an alternate location and I don't know what directory in linux it is looking at to get that list of drivers. I want to use linux and know learn it well, but right now it is being difficult. I'm thinking about reinstalling and doing the complete install. I did that on my desktop and haven't had as many problems. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm also trying to get my wireless to work with NDISwrapper, but had compiling errors on that as well. It's Intel 2200 BG adapter if any of you are familar with it. Any help?? THANKS!!! The other thing I forgot to add is that the adapter works fine in XP and I can't ping the router or anything in Fedora. Right now, I'm just trying to install the right driver....

yes ive had that problem. but it was with mandrake 9.1, but i suppose itl be no different.
im not sure about the error message but i am sure of the acting like its not connected. all you have to do, is go into /etc/sysconfig/network and delete the line that says.
GATEWAY=x and then save it. it is recomended that you restart after doing this.

x= the ip of your computer

That suggestion got me really excited and I raced to do it, but unfortunately that line is not in that file anyway.....the only thing in there is this:

networking=YES
host=localhost.localdomain

Any other suggestions? I'm gonna take it to my school help desk today they are usually good about internet problems seeing how they face them all the time.

:scratch: so it's not the problem i thought it was. Have you got any internet or network config wizards or anything like that.
if you have try doing that or again if you already have.
linux can become a bit..sort of forgetfull with those kind of things.

also if you have dial-up are you running kppp for connecting or do you have ADSL,CABLE etc.,

Heh, thanks for trying some more but I decided to hell with it and I reinstalled linux entirely, and the problem is fixed now :)
