Question Interface will not associate after dhcpcd fails

When trying to connect to my wireless network sometimes everything works, I set essid and key, and iwconfig shows the card is associated and has good signal strength, then I dhcpcd ath0 and get an IP address and everything is fine. However, sometimes dhcpcd fails and I do not get an IP address and dhcpcd brings the interface down automatically.
Ok, so I ifconfig ath0 up, ifconfig to see ath0 and wifi0 as being up. Then I iwconfig and see that the card is not associate and DOES NOT associate at all after this. Signal strength is listed as 0 and the AP MAC = Not-Associated. At this point I have tried all sorts of things, using wlanconfig to destroy and then recreate the interface, ifconfig down then up again, reloading the ath_pci module (I am using the madwifi drivers), but nothing works. The other odd thing is that this will not be fixed after reboots and I eventually have to reboot into windows where I am able to connect to the same network just fine.
I then try rebooting and see that the card still will not associate, go to windows, and do this shuffle everytime I boot my laptop until eventually, for some reason it works, and my card associates. As long as dhcpcd does not fail on me I can switch wireless networks, get a new IP address, and its just fine. Then sometimes the card doesn't associate and I'm stuck using windows .
I am not sure where to start, is there another way to reset the interface other than using ifconfig to bring the interface down then ack up again.
Oh, another factoid: with an ifconfig wifi0 will show that there is data it is receiving on the network, it just isn't getting forwarded to the wifi0 interface, or something... Also, I can scan for networks just fine even when the card will not associate, wlanconfig ath0 list scan will list my network and the other networks it sees just fine.

Help me!
