Do you see anything about MadWifi/Atheros if you go to System > Administration > Restricted Drivers Manager?

I had a similar problem with the same Atheros build wireless card with Ubuntu. Atheros chipset and is only supported by non-free drivers. madwifi + ath_hal also did not work nor there was clear log message. Installed a Windows XP driver for the Atheros chip using ndiswrapper and it worked.
