Question Installing the rt2500 driver

Hi i am really new to linux, I am running Ubuntu 6.06 and am trying to install the Linksys wireless g portable usb adapter WUSB54G. I asked earlier how to get it to work with linux, and I was directed to download and install the re2500 driver. I have no idea how to install it at all. Can someone help me?

I would have guessed that Ubuntu would have a clear howto for installing that driver. Also, I think that kernel 2.6.17 has that driver built in.

Ah yea now that you mention it, if you are using ubuntu's kernel it will have that driver. If you get your kernel from ubuntu and compile yourself it will have that driver. However, I don't think that vanilla kernel sources have it. I would just try modprobe rt2500 and check if its in there.

The driver you need is rt2570. I believe it is available as a module when Ubuntu loads. I'm surprised Ubuntu didn't auto-configure the NIC... Ubuntu detected and installed my Belkin rt2500usb, no problems. Are you certain the chipset is an rt2500usb?

If you go into networksetup, you can try manually selecting the rt2570 driver if Ubuntu doesn't autodetect your network interface.
