ICS to college network via wireless xp host

Hi,

I have recently taken a post at a college and am required to connect to the network via ethernet and 802.1x authentication using a client: H3C authentication client version 2.40.

This is windows only software, a linux version being too old a version number to connect to the network. It will not run under wine, closing after some 20 seconds.

I have had the idea of using a friends windows laptop in the next room as a sharing host to connect to the network using the client and then share the connection wirelessly as she has no spare ethernet port, that being used to connect to the college network.

I have made the appropriate settings in xp and upon enabling roaming mode on my laptop am able to establish a connection to her laptop, below is the output of this connection in iwconfig:

Quote:

kirmonkey:/home/rick# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"pxc-net"
Mode:Ad-Hoc Frequency:2.462 GHz Cell: 02:12:F0:00:55:06
Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Sensitivity=8/0
Retry limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:C27A-0EE2-****-****-****-**** Security mode:open

Link Quality=97/100 Signal level=-27 dBm Noise level=-85 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:378 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
I am, however, unable to connect to the net.

I have tried setting the pxc-net as my default wireless connection and getting the xp box to assign an ip address for me but to no avail, this dis-connects the wireless link and leaves me unable to do anything.

Possible solutions can involve purchasing as I need this connection to carry out my work with more convenience in the coming months.

I am currently running the following system:

Debian Lenny
Kernel 2.6.26-1-686
ipw2200 network card with firmare version ipw2200-fw-3.0 installed

Will be online to provide and information this coming week and more.

Regards

Get yourself a really cheap Windows machine (like a netbook, or headless PC) to make and maintain your own connection. You might find this to be more stable in the long run.

Aye, was thinking that, I have this option available to me.

I assume it is a case of two ethernet ports (one in and one out) and then a crossover cable to connect the two to have the windows box as my connection client in effect?

Use a switch instead of a crossover cable - you'll have better reliability.
