How to turn off Wireless Networking Kill Switch?

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on an Acer Laptop with Intel Pro Wireless 3945 ABG.
I cannot get a wireless connection. My guess is that it is somehow turned off.
There is a small toggle switch to turn on/off the wireless in the front of this computer; when on, it flickers yellow. It remains off, in either position!
Finally, this is a dual boot setup and the wireless works fine on the other side.
The network controler and intel chipset are recognized.
This is from the SysLog:

Oct 2 12:48:41 mjh-laptop kernel: [ 1579.816550] Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.

It looks there is no wireless driver loaded for your adapter. The full output of "dmesg", "lsmod", "lspci", and "lspci -n" might be helpful here. I know that sounds like a lot, but getting wireless adapters working is probably the single biggest problem with Linux right now.

You can always punt and use ndiswrapper. If you have the wireless device working on Windows, then you already have the required driver files. Google "ndiswrapper" or search this site for examples of how to get it working.

Thanks David!
I hate windows and only keep a copy of it because I can't do my taxes with a linux app. OOPs, I have to break this up into sections, it's too long for the editor on this site.
I've copied the files you asked for:

Hardy doesn't support the 3945 at all well. You need to get the support in backports - then even the light (on Dell) works again, and you can also use an encrypting router.
Let me go see what I had to do to get this to work ...

Later: Have a look at this ; should b all you need.

If syg00's response helped you solve your problem, you really do not need to read this reply.

From your lsmod output:

That is the driver for your wireless device. You should probably grep "/var/log/messages" for "wifi" and "wlan" to see if the driver loads properly or outputs any warnings or errors:
Code:

egrep '(wifi|wlan)' /var/log/messages
The tg3 driver matches the vendor ID, device ID pair for your driver:
Code:

lspci output:
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5789 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 21)
lspci -n output
04:00.0 0200: 14e4:169d (rev 21)

I matched the driver by searching "linux-2.6.26.5/include/linux/pci_ids.h".

Unfortunately, it appears that the GPIO interface that handles the wireless enable/disable switch on your laptop is badly handled by your kernel. You might be able to solve this by using ndiswrapper, or you may have to build a custom kernel from source.

Using ndiswrapper is usually easier. On the other hand, I have a laptop at home that has a Broadcom wireless adapter, and I got it working very well by using a custom kernel. However, I build kernels for a living, so it does not take me very long.
