HostAP - very mini HOWTO on Fedora 2

My ultimate goal is to get my Intel 2100 wireless card working with WEP.

Well I must have spent 30 hours trying to get HostAP installed - haven't even got as far as the IPW2100! And I've re-installed Fedora 6 times now :-)

The first problem I had was the 'make' wouldn't work successfully. To resolve the problem I had to do the following.

Install the 'kernel-source' RPM
cd to /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-1.358 (or whatever your kernel is)
make oldconfig
make modules

The make modules took ages to complete and seemed to take up around a gig of space, so on a clean FC2 install I've now used 4.1GB and I though XP was bad ;-)

Anyway I can now successfully run make :-)

But make install bombs out - see output below.

As I said it's taken me hours and hours to get to this point so hopefully my efforts will help someone else one day. You never know I might even get my WLAN working......

[root@Lappy hostap-driver-0.1.3]# make install
make install_check
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/steve/kits/hostap/hostap-driver-0.1.3'
Module installation directory not valid: '/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358custom'
Most probable cause for this is modified kernel headers.
You will need to install module file (driver/modules/hostap*.{,k}o) manually.
make[1]: *** [install_check] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/steve/kits/hostap/hostap-driver-0.1.3'
make: *** [install_2.6] Error 2
[root@Lappy hostap-driver-0.1.3]#

Well I ran into the same issue you are posting about tongiht, and I have a answer for you...

if you set you KERNEL_PATH=/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-1.358 that is what causes the issue, do this:

KERNEL_PATH=/usr/src/linux
to
KERNEL_PATH=/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358/build/

and it will make and make install perfectly

Do feel bad though, it took me 30 hours also...

/lib/modules/[kernel]/build/ is linked to /usr/src/[kernel]/

I tried it anyway and it didn't work. Did you install/reinstall/reconfigure anything before changing the PATH?

Sorry I forgot to ask if you are running Fedora. Are you?

I have tried with FC1 and 2 with the same results.

I am running FC2,

Come to think of it I did compile everything like you suggested before I make that change and did the make install,

But I did find this on hoshap mailing list, while search for a solution to a different issue I am having (Bridging releated)

From Hostap Mailing list:

Edit /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-1.358/Makefile and remove "custom" from
EXTRAVERSION = -1.358custom
