HostAP as a client

Hey, I am using gentoo 2004.2 and I have a SMC 2532W-B (prism2.5) pc card I would like to use. I don't want to use orinoco_cs, as it doesn't support monitor mode, and I would rather not use wlan-ng, as it doesn't use the wireless-tools. Is there anything special I need to do to use hostap as a client? Are there any tutorials available?
