Question help - wireless card no longer recognized?

For several months I was a happy camper using redhat 8.1 on an ibm thinkpad t23 with an orinoco wireless data card.

One day recently, after starting up from sleep mode, the machine hung. On reboot, it couldn't get past the pcmcia support. I chkconfig'd the pcmcia support out in order to get something going, then after booting, played with various things, upto and including uninstalling the pcmcia rpm and re-installing. No luck - pcmcia support hangs the boot process.

Today I installed redhat 9. Now it will boot with pcmcia, but it pretends the card is not there. Cannot activate network eth1. I know the hardware is good because when I boot the machine in windoze mode, the wireless connection works just fine.

Where do I start debugging this? Any help appreciated.

This seems like it might be at the root of the problem. Ideas as to how to fix?

# modprobe orinoco_cs
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o: init_module: Operation not permitted
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o: insmod orinoco_cs failed

# insmod orinoco_cs
Using /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_cs.o
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_cs.o: unresolved symbol register_pccard_driver_R1c442d6c
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_cs.o: unresolved symbol CardServices_Re4eef0a4
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_cs.o: unresolved symbol unregister_pccard_driver_Rdb348cd2

and dmesg reports
ds: no socket drivers loaded!
unloading Kernel Card Services
