Red face Help for the truly green -- Mandrake 10.0 and DWL-520 Wireless

Well, now that I've had a long, detailed post completely obliterated because I posted URL's to other relevant threads inside... Apologies if this post seems less warm and cuddly. That's quite an interesting rule to disallow URL's if someone's post count is under 5.

In the interest of bandwidth, here is what I'll refer to below as Error X:

Quote:
insmoding module forcedeth failed at /usr/lib/libDrakX/modules.pm line 85
  • I am trying to get a D-Link DWL-520 wireless card (Revision "C") to work with Mandrake 10 running a KDE desktop environment.
  • This is my first install of linux.
  • While I was decent at Unix syntax back in college (TCSH was my favorite shell, loved vi, etc, etc) I am quite lost.
  • KDE currently sees my wireless PCI card as an "ADM8201 Wireless Adapter"
  • If I select this card and click the "Run Config Tool" button, I am met with a menu asking what type of connection I'd like to configure. I move the radio button to Wireless and click Next.
  • I immediately get Error X.
  • I am then only presented with one option -- a radio dot for Manual Choice next to Net Device.
  • When choosing any of the Prism or Orinico options other than prism2_plx or plain-jane orinico, I am met with Error X
  • If I choose one of those two exceptions, I'm presented with a menu that asks if I'd like to "Autoprobe" or "Specify Options."
  • If I choose Autoprobe and click Next, I'm given an error like,"loading module prism2_plx failed. Try again w/ other parameters?"
  • If I choose no, I get Error X

My best guess from the posts I found searching on this subject is that I need to do some stuff at a command prompt (or included as custom parameters when I'm asked whether I want to "specify options"). I could just really use someone giving me a friendly walk-through of it (basically like I'm a 2-year old), preferrably in KDE.

I truly apologize for my ignorance on all of this. It's not a position I find myself comfortable in.

I appreciate any help. I'm going to now reboot into Linux and try to get more specific details, maybe re-edit my post with them. Thanks!

Craig

This thread is for an SMC card, but it has the same ADMtek chip and drivers specific to that chip.

The error appears to be from harddrake2
http://rpmfind.rediris.es/rpm2html/m...1mdk.i586.html

I think the most straightfoward way to set network and wireless options is throught editing
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<interface name>

If you have another ethernet card and want to use both cards then both cards have to be on different networks for any routing to work.
You will have to set GATEWAY equal to the IP address of your gateway/router on the same network. This just needs to be set for your primary interface.

look at ifup-wireless script in the same directory for wireless parameters that can be set.

That ADMtek driver appears to be just for a 2.4 kernel.

Here is thread where person created a Makefile for 2.6 kernel:

Considering that I can't use the file search engine in Mandrake without it error'ing out and I can't see Win32 drives like I should be able to, would it make more sense to just wipe and install a previous version?

Nevermind. Apparently Mandrake's website only offers the 10.0 ISO's.

And slackware's site doesn't even OFFER the iso's...

Frustration...

Edit: Found 'em...And the board has no delete function? Weird.
