Help connecting to wireless access point

Hi this may sound a little silly but im trying to connect to an AP without any WPA or WEP.

Im using debian with a senao SL-2511 (Prisim chipset). All i want to do is associate with the AP and get a dynamic IP.

Should I use the wlanng drivers or the hostap drivers?

when i use the wlanng drivers i get operation not supported (8B06) when i try to change the mode to managed or set the essid.

Can someone PLEASE tell me the simple steps to connect to my AP (using iwconfig).

Thanks heaps
