Got LAN connection but no internet connection

Hi,

I am using Fedora Core 3 (yes, I know it's kind of old now, but it's been working fine, so I do not want to upgrade to Fedora Core 7). I've been using this system in my LAN environment using wired network. Recently, I needed to go wireless due to the physical locations of broadband modem and router and my computers. So, I bought a wireless NIC (Linksys WMP54G) and installed it. At first, it didn't work with my Fedora 3 system at all. The system did not recongnize the NIC, and I was not able to connect my Fedora system to my LAN, but after some surfing on the Internet from another computer, I managed to have the Fedora system recognize the NIC, and now the system is on my LAN.

However, I am not able to connect to the Internet. I would like to read my emails on my Fedora machines and would like to browse the Web.

I was able to add my Fedora system to my LAN by downloading and installing ndiswrapper. If I iwconfig, the output indicates that wireless communication between my router and the NIC is well-established (100% connection). So, I thought if I can put my Fedora system to my LAN, I can surf the net, but I was wrong. I pinged the Fedora system from another computer on my LAN, and the Fedora system is recognized, so I am positive that the wireless connection between the router and the NIC on my Fedora system is well-established.

Could someone help me how to get the internet connection?

Thank you for your message, comprookie2000. I'm not an expert on Linux, so I typed as your message says, and got the "dhcpcd not found" error, so I tried the following command:

/sbin/dhclient ra0

My wireless device is recognized as ra0 instead of wlan0. So, I typed ra0 and got the following result:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.1
Copyright 2004 Internet Systems Consortium.

For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/products/DHCP

/sbin/dhclient-script: configuration for ra0 not found. Continuing with defaults.
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/network-functions: line 47: ra0: No such file or directory
Listening on LPF/ra0/xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx <--my MAC address for wireless NIC
Sending on LPF/ra0/xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx <--my MAC address for wireless NIC
Can't bind to dhcp address: Address already in use
Please make sure there is no other dhcp server
running and that there's no entry for dhcp or
bootp in /etc/inetd.conf. Also make sure you
are not running HP JetAdmin software, which
includes a bootp server.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know what this error message means to me. I have a wireless Linksys router which also functions as DHCP server. Since I need to access my Fedora machine from other computers on the LAN (i.e. Windows and Macintosh machines), I set my Fedora machine so that the IP address for the Fedora machine is always the same instead of dynamic. Could this be causing the problem?
