Unhappy Getting no IP address with a wifi WG311 under Mandrake 10.0

I have a funny problem :

I have installed Mandrake 10.0 and a Netgear WG311 PCI card (it all works perfectly under XP). I downloaded the most recent madwifi modules (using cvs.sourceforge.net), installed the wireless-tools and kernel-source, compiled, loaded the modules (wlan, ath_pci, ath_hal, though it seems that only ath_pci is needed, it launches the two others itself, correct ?), edited the ifcfg-ath0 file and started the card with "ifup ath0" and it worked

Then I started getting problems  :

1) though I inserted the wlan, ath_pci and ath_hal names in /etc/modules they won't load at boot. I replaced this with a .sh file doing "by hand" the modprobes. It is dirty but it works . It is not very important but if someone knows what goes wrong ?

2) in drakconf, I tried to rename the localhost (because my adsl provider also provides a huge 'hostname' which is ugly). Then Gnome complained that something was probably wrong (I did not write down that message in detail, sorry) and at the next reboot the ifup ath0 failed to give an IP address.

I discovered drakconf had erased my ifcfg-ath0 file and I corrected it back to original but still did not work.
I eventually reinstalled completely the M10.0 (but without touching /home) and recompiled the madwifi thing etc as I did the first time (as far as I remember!), and I still get no IP connection.

I have seen on other forums that other people had the same problem (but at first start, they did not get the chance I had the first time, it seems) but noone answered them. Can someone give me tips ?

Thanks,
Lorenzaccio

Hey stupid me!
My problem with ifcfg-ath0 is only that the essid was not strictly the same (a capital on one side and a lowercase on the other side).. Stupid, isn't it ? However, one would wish that the ifup failure would be more explicit.

I still need to be explained what to do with the /etc/modules and the ftp freezing (see my other thread next to this one)
