Getting Netgear Wireless USB dongle WPN111 (Atheros chipset) to work on Ubuntu 6.06

Hi,

I am a linux newbie - having used windows all my life. I have install Ubuntu 6.06 DVD version - and when I plug in my WPN111 wireless usb dongle into my pc, it shows in the device manager, but alas - no wifi. After some googling, I discovered that:
  • WPN111 has an atheros chipset
  • That there were 2 ways to get it to work - ndiswrapper & madwifi
  • that madwifi did not support USB

So therefor, I have to use ndiswrapper. The guide on their wiki is way to hard for me to understand - as a total begginer - however The MadWifi GuideI can understand and do.

I would be very grateful if anyone could give me a hand in this...

Thanks in advance,

Ilya Muz.

I've used ndiswrapper in the past. It does work, but it was a pain to set up, and I had endless problems because the PCI card I was using was rubbish.
Given how long I spent playing with ndiswrapper before I bought a new Netgear card and used madwifi, I would probably recommend you sell the USB card and buy a PCI one which is listed on the madwifi site. The Netgear WG311T works great for me now.

WPN111 works well using ubuntu feisty and ndiswrapper

I found it easy to get up and running with ndiswrapper doing the following:

1. make sure ndiswrapper is installed (use synaptic if its missing)

2. put the driver disk in and cd to /media/cdrom0/ndis5

3. run: sudo ndiswrapper -i netwpn11.inf

4. run: sudo ndiswrapper -m

5. run: sudo modprobe ndiswrapper (this will happen automatically when you reboot)

6. put the device in the USB slot (if it wasn't there already).

Now click on the network icon and you will see the wireless connections it detected.

I hope this helps.

Dear sir,

It's almost a year later and your instructions worked like a charm on the very first try; running Hardy 8.04

You Rock! Thanks to people like you, Linux is easy!!!!;)

I am totally new to Linux and cannot even get my Ubuntu 8.10 to install ndiswrapper v1.53 as I cannot get Synaptic to even find the download no matter what I have tried.

The only thing seemed to work was dragging and dropping it into the empty box at the very top right of Synaptic but it still would not do anything with it or recognise it so im baffled what to do next

HELP!!!

works great - until reboot

thank you for these instructions...but i've had the same problem with them in both Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 9: they work perfectly (even up here in mid-2010) until i restart my machine, at which point wireless goes away, never to return.

has anybody got the wpn111 working once and for all on a recent linux version?

thanks...
