Fedora 9 wireless setup

I have a DELL desktop with build in ethernet and an aftermarket wifi card.

I installed F9 on this machine.

iwlist sees both eth0 and wlan0.

I can activate eth0, but not wlan0.

In the network manager, wlan0 shows up as a 'device' but not on the hardware tab. Only eth0 does show up in both places.

From command line I have tried ifconfig wlan0 up, but that did not work.

Can I assume that the system recognozes the hardware?

What more do I need?

Thanks in advance.

If this is a PCI card, lspci will list all the pci devices the OS knows about. If it is a USB dongle, try lsusb.

Sort through the long list and see if you can find something that looks like your wireless card.

lspci sees both adapters

Forgive me for not posting the exact output. The PC is at home I am at work, I have no way of copy/pasting output.

When I run lspci it lists two network adapters. A 10/100 onboard Intel card, and a 'wavelan' chipset wireless adapter, which I am assuming is the PCI wireless card.

I notice at startup it loads eth0 (the LAN card), but does not attempt to load wlan0 at all.

Bear with me, I am a n00b at this.

Thanks.

you need to get ndiswrapper and the windows driver for that pci card go here to get ndiswrapper ndiswrapper and you need to find the windows driver for that pci card. Here is the list of wireless cards that are know to work ndiswrapper list.

Downloaded ndiswrapper, now what?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I got the ndiswrapper stuff, and the windows xp driver the the DWL-520 rev E.

When I try to 'make distclean' I first get an error about KBUILD environemnt variable not being set.

When I set to the kernel source, I get an error that basically says it cannot find the source files. Not installed?

When I look on the Fedora 9 DVD I am not sure what to install to have the source files.

Another side question.

Would it be easier to just get a Linux approved 802.11g card? I have spent a week and a half trying to configure this. A new card is not going to break the bank.

What kind?

I would like to learn the ndiswrapper thing, but can certainly just recplace the card as well.

Regards,

Well it took me about a week to get my wireless card setup and its not linux approved but ya a linux approved card would probably be easier but if you just mess with your current card you can save money. What kind of card do you have anyways?

DLINK DWL-520 Rev E

So how do I install NDISWRAPPER?

U have Fedora 9, the install DVD, etc.

When I follow the instructions to install ndiswrapper, it says it cannot find the source tree or something.

What other things need to be installed?

Is there already binary for ndiswrapper for Fedora 9?

Thanks.
