/dev/eth0 missing after apt-get upgrade

I did an apt-get upgrade to my Debian testing yesterday and after a reboot, I've lost my highspeed networks (both use DHCP).

I have an HP zd7392 with Debian and kernel v2.6.13.

if I try to bring the eth0 interface up manually, I get

Code:
TAKIN:/var/log# ifdown eth0
ifdown: interface eth0 not configured
TAKIN:/var/log# ifup eth0

I notice that the dev files for eth0 and wlan0 are missing

But lspci seems to recognise the ethernet card at least

It's also strange that ifconfig shows the connections, even if the IP address is missing.

I have flushed my iptables, so that's not the problem.

Where else should I look.

update

Just found that the wlan0 connection works in spite of the fact that there's no /dev/wlan0 file. Now I find that ppp doesn't work. There is a /dev/ppp0 file and pon runs, but fails with error 'no network protocol running.' Any ideas?
