Connected, but no internet - BackTrack 4, rtl8185 driver
 
Hey all,

I'm using the latest version of BackTrack 4, which is now based off of Ubuntu.

I'm fairly certain I have successfully installed the rtl8185 drivers for my USB wireless card, and my network manager (wicd) tells me that I am connected. However, I cannot connect to any websites.

Well, you need an IP to connect to a network. You either get an IP from a DHCP server on your network, or give your interface a static IP. You don't seem to have any IP, just an access point. Either use some sort of dhcpcd/dhcpclient command to get an IP from a server or configure your network manually with the ifconfig command.

PS To get your wireless device to show up in the output of ifconfig, run

ifconfig wlan0 up
or
ifconfig eth1 up

I've tried giving it a static IP, as well as trying a DHCP assignment. I've been using the wicd interface for all of this, but I still can't connect to a website. Currently it's using a static IP.

I've also just run ifconfig wlan0 up, and now I have some new output from ifconfig.

Well, if you have an IP, check your routing for a correct default gateway and /etc/resolv.conf for the correct names of DNS servers. And you should be able to browse the internet.

I've fed wicd a static IP and gave it the 3 DNS addresses, but I'm still not getting a connection.

And in your route table you're missing the loopback interface.

Since that distro is based on Ubuntu, I haven't a clue.

Was it formerly based off Slackware? With Slack, no problem.

1 - is your wireless card actually using a driver and working?

2 - do you have interfaces configured in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf?

After installing this package, make sure the /etc/rc.d/rc.wicd
script is executable; if necessary, do:
  chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.wicd

Results have varied, but you will probably need/want to remove
any references to interfaces from /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf - in
other words, make that file look as if netconfig has never been
run.

When you start X, you should see a wicd icon in the system tray;
click on it to open the gui interface and configure as desired.
3 - to resolve a domain name to it's IP, you must have working DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf

Yeah, it used to be based on Slackware, which kind of made everything nicer. I've been able to set up wireless in Slackware 12, but BT4 is causing me problems.

2 - do you have interfaces configured in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf?
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf does not exist in Ubuntu it seems.

3 - to resolve a domain name to it's IP, you must have working DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf
