Connect to a wireless router

hello there,

i am using the suse 8.2 distribution and i am currently trying to connect to the internet through a d-link router. Linux can recognize the network card of my laptop (acer) but i cannot manage to "see" the router and thus internet.
Can anybody suggest to me which steps i should follow so as to make the connection with the router(which is also set with a password from a machine with windows xp)?

Thanks in advance
