College Wireless?

OK so I just started my first semester of college this year and am having problems connecting to the schools wireless using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (and for the record my notebook connects fine on a wireless router at my home as well as a relatives house). When my friends select the network with Windows it connects to the server and then an IE page pops up which requests your student ID # and your student password. However when I select the network in Ubuntu the first dot in network manager becomes green (so I am connected to the server) but no Firefox page pops up to prompt me for an ID and password, thus the second dot will never turn green and after a few minutes I'm left with the dreaded disconnected icon in network manager. Does anyone know a solution to this from experience with college servers since many colleges seem to use this setup. The only solution I can think of at the moment is trying to install IEis4Linux and hope that the server will recognize and open an IE window. I know there is a solution because the schools website says there is Linux compatibility with everything except for some lab software but I don't need that on my notebook anyways.

P.S. The same also occurs when I plug into the dorm jack with an Ethernet cord.

Possible Solution?

I hate to double post but I may have found a solution but cannot test it until I return to the dorms on Monday. I changed the proxy settings in Firefox from the default to auto detect as someone had posted it as a solution on another forum.

Maybe, you just need to start firefox manually?

Autodetect proxy settings is a good possibility on a college system. I'd start there and post back if that doesn't work.
