Cisco Aironet 352 pcmcia Problem

Hello ,

i am trying to configure this pcmcia card to my laptop and for some (stupid?) reason i can't .

At the beggining ( just after a clean install ) the card was not working at all ( both leds were on )Im using Red Hat 9.0 and this is what i have done till now .

My kernel is 2.4.20-8 #1 and uninstalled the pcmcia rpm that came with the installation and tried this one : pcmcia-cs-3.2.8.tar.gz

Things got better and now at least i get my card recognized :

[root@localhost root]# cardctl ident
Socket 0:
product info: "Cisco Systems", "350 Series Wireless LAN Adapter"
manfid: 0x015f, 0x000a
function: 6 (network)

and

[root@localhost root]# cardctl status
Socket 0:
5V 16-bit PC Card
function 0: [ready]

Next step i uninstalled the cisco drivers that also came with the installation and i tryied my luck with these : linux-acu-driver-v21.tar.gz

I m only using console so i installed only the driver with the -id option . So far so good ... i do a lsmod and i get this :

Module Size Used by Tainted: P
airo_cs 4580 0 (unused)
airo 98976 1 [airo_cs]
ds 8680 1 [airo_cs]
yenta_socket 13472 1

usbcore 78784 1 [hid usb-uhci ehci-hcd]
ext3 70784 1
jbd 51892 1 [ext3]

I thought that i was ready to go and i m trying to bring the interface up by typing ifconfig eth1 up .

And i was right the interface went up without problems ....

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt:3 Base address:0x100

But at that point my real trouble begin .... i cant get that interface be recognized as a wireless interface and not as ethernet ...

I always get this :

[root@localhost /]# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 no wireless extensions

I tryied downloading the latest wireless tools version but i always get the same result .

I hope that i am making a stupid mistake somewhere and it will be easy to find a way to get this to work with some expert help :) ...

Thank you in advance and please excuse my english .

Could you (with the card unplugged), plug in the card and show what happens in your /var/log/messages? Might be a clue there. :)

(btw: Your English is better than many "English" people!)

any Help?

Actually, you can get wireless extensions to work on ethX devices. iwconfig would detect this. Some drivers just like to come up as eth1 or whatever. This problem is something else.

My suggestion would be to use something newer than Red Hat 9. It's old. I've told people that a lot here. Having a kernel newer than 2003 will certainly help with wireless stuff. Or, if you're daring...compile and install the latest 2.4 kernel (.30) onto RH 9.
