Cant get SMC wireless card recognized on MDK 9.1

Hello once again,
well i tried 2 install my new smc2632w-ca pc card on ibm tp 390 w/Mandrake 9.1 running. I installed the 3 wlan drivers as found here http://prism2.unixguru.raleigh.nc.us/ using the i586 versions. originally i used the i686 version because message splash on bootup stating i586 for bamboo installed and then the next line would say something to the effect that i686 for tty1 was also being used. I assume i am right in using the i586 drivers? when i use mandrake Control Center i see nothing for a wireless ethernet card. The original Linksys wired ethernet card worked fine in the pcmia slot. Have i missed something? I did the research and found this card is suppose to have the prism II chipset and these drivers should work like a charm. But alas linux has humbled this newbie once more. Have I missed something else? I get green power light on card and it beeps twice when removed and reinserted but still it doesnt show in MCC. I made a printout of dmesg if that helps:

dmesg

It does not look like the card is being picked up.

Check out this page which has very detailed instructions on how to
get it working.

well at this point i'm ready to throw out everything. i talked to SMC support it turns out i have version 2 of the 2632w wifi card and it uses the atmel chip set. i removed the wlan drivers and installed drivers that they e-mailed to me. alas still no card in mandrake center shows up. i get an error message on the bootup splash screen when pcmcia service is started saying "cardmgr (some#):unsupported card in socket 0." So i try to install latest pcmcia-cs-3.2.7 package and of course I cant. first question on make install is where is my kernel source and uses default /usr/src/linux. When i choose that it says it not there. i do a search for any directory w/linux in it and try several and none of them are right either. What do i have to do to get this pcmcia-cs package installed???? Could somebody please give a clear and concise method for finding out where or even if i have my kernel source on my set-up. What is the kernel source anyway? And 2nd explain in newbie terms if i dont have kernel source what are the steps to get thesource? are they on distro disc's,do i have to go on net 2 get them etc? And once i have source what do i do w/it so maybe i can compile pcmcia_cs. I also was able to install wireless tools and nothing comes up. the pcmcia/config file i updated per SMC web site and only difference is bind "wvlan_cs". I can give u web site page w/all additions i made to all files per smc if u need it. here's the output of dmesg again if helpful:

look at http://mandrakeuser.org/docs/index.html
go to Installation section "Kernel Upgrade"

You will need to install kernel-source and kernel-headers RPMs
and also compilers (Development tools). I would first try your
Installation program. I apologize, I don't use Mandrake so I don't
have more details. Could ask more on Mandrake distribution forum
if you get stuck.

If you dont have any linux-* directories under /usr/src then you do not have these installed.

Glad to see you could get some help from SMC, that's cool.

I wish you good luck.

ok thanx .by installing kernel source i got the pcmcia module installed. but besides the card listing when pcmcia service starts at bootup i get nothing from iwconfig(lo no wireless extensions). how do i even know if the atmel drivers i compiled took? if anybody has any experience w/the atmel driver from sourceforge i would appreciate hearing from u.

i thought i might add this additional info. I'm not sure if i was successful in adding the atmel drivers. I see somme pare errors at the end of make all (whatever that does) and then make install completes ok. so was I succesful in adding the atmel driver??? I also included output from cardctl and iwconfig. Please dont be shy about giving some guidance to a newbie. Afterall all i want for xmas is my wifi:

so are u saying that the atmel-wlan driver did not install? and that is why i do not show eth0 when i do an uwconfig? I should comment out ethtool.h in usr/..../wireless.h?

from the make it looks like the driver could have been compiled and installed. the make did not complete on building all the parts due to the errors. You should try that commenting out to try to fix the make errors.
make should complete if warnings occur, but not usually on errors.

ok i commented out ethtool.h(which was as an include line) but now i fail on another part of make all which i post below. can someone also tell me what options i should select when it asks if i should build all (Y/N) etc at the beginning of make process. it seems like i see alot about usb flashing and i really dont need usb support. there are like 5 ?'s and i've been saying yes to all
of them not knowing. any way here's the output:

ld -r -o /usr/src/atmelwlandriver/objs/usbvnet5_2958.o vnetusba.o callbacks.o command.o linux_usb.o rx.o tx.o vnet.o vnet_kernel.o

It seems that the wxWindows library is not installed.
wx-config, the script providing information about wxWindows
installation, is missing. Please, refer to the README.linux
or visit www.wxwindows.org for further information.
We are sorry about the inconvenience.

hello again,
hope u had a good xmas. i went to the wxwindows sight and downloaded the x11 package on a hunch and installed it. i used the config options found on this page: http://iprserv.jura.uni-leipzig.de/p...r/000475.html.
But now when i compile i get this error on make all for atmel driver:
c++ -I/usr/local/lib/wx/include/x11univ-2.4 -D__WXUNIVERSAL__ -D__WXX11__ -I/usr/X11R6/include -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_LARGE_FILES -I. -I. -DOS_LINUX -c WinterData.cpp

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/atmelwlandriver/src/apps/winter'
make: *** [all] Error 1
[root@localhost atmelwlandriver]# make install
i'm worse off now then b4 i installed wx package. anybody outthere can give me some advise

You don't need XWindows to install the driver. the guy was just mentioning that after reboot with card inserted XWindows won't startup at
all.

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous:@cvs.atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/atmelwlandriver co atmelwlandriver

(On one line cvs -d:pserver...atmelwlandriver co atmelwlandriver)

You will need a network connection and port 2401 open for TCP and UDP.

that command will give you the latest sources or you can just download from the website.

hello again. i already downloaded the latest atmel driver. why is this going 2 help? Dont i need 2 know why the compile is failing now from my previous post? I even went to this site for an alternate atmel driver:
http://at76c503a.berlios.de/support.html#trouble where i was able to load an rpm of the atmel driver and put that on my system but still no wifi. here is a copy of the var/log/messages file after i insert the wifi card:

Dec 27 17:07:42 localhost kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 0
