Cant get monitor mode by hand but kismet works

I have an orinoco gold pcmcia card that works with Kismet and airsnort perfectly. When trying to set the card into monior mode by hand to try out dsniff, I get:

# iwconfig eth1 mode monitor
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :

Does anyone know why?
