Hello imwilliam, welcome to LQ,

could you please open a terminal and post the output of the commands
Code:

iwconfig
and
Code:

lspci -k | grep iA5 wireless
Do you know which encryption your wireless network uses? Are you using DHCP? Please provide more information.

Markus

imwilliam 08-20-2011 03:46 AM

william@william-MacBookPro:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

william@william-MacBookPro:~$ lspci -k | grep iA5 wireless
grep: wireless: No such file or directory
william@william-MacBookPro:~$
Sorry but i do not know what encryption is.I am new, but i have broadcom, not atheros.I hope that helps, although i am not sure what they mean :-/

markush 08-20-2011 03:51 AM

Well, at least there is no wireless adapter recognized by Linux. Could you please post the whole output of
Code:

lspci -k
You'll probably have to install the Broadcom-driver from the repository of your distribution.

You have a Broadcom-adapter (as you already mentioned) with 4331 Chipset, it seems to be difficult to find the appropriate Linux-driver for this device. I've found nothing on the Broadcom-site. Look at the repository of your distribution and if there is nothing maybe you'll have to use ndiswrapper (which makes a Windowsdriver available under Linux) but I didn't find a Windows-driver as well.

imwilliam 08-20-2011 04:09 AM

how do i look at the repository of my distribution?

markush 08-20-2011 04:12 AM

Well, which distribution are you using? Ubuntu as you mentioned? well, then read the documentation about the package manager: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto and find out if there is a driver for your wireless adapter and how to install it.

There is much documentation about Ubuntu in the internet, just search and read.

Good luck

Markus

Well i tried the ndiswrapper (windows wireless drivers) and it didn't work.i guess i'll just keep looking.thanks for all your help.
