can`t connect to my ISP
hello....first of all...i`m a lin newbie ;] i have a problem...i have a Dlink DFE-530TX ethernet card and a Dlink DWL-900AP+ access point which i use as a client...i installed everything....i tried to ping my AP (client) and everything went ok...then i pinged my ISP-s AP and everything went ok too.....so...i guess my hardware is installed OK...BUT...i totally don`t understand how do i identify to my ISP (where do i put my username and pass) ...i looked all over the system...i simply dont understand :] (in my windoze everything works fine :()....by the way...i`m using fedora core 1 linux ....if any1 could plz explain this a bit to me....i would be most gratefull....thnx in advance :]

I'm confused about what you mean. By AP you mean Access Point? What is your ISP's AP that you said you managed to ping (is it a router of some kind, or a cable modem)?
|
I too can't understand what you're saying. Put it in terms of router, modem, etc. If you have something like cable, you don't need to put in a username/password in linux.
Are you able to view web pages? |
ok....sorry for my mistakes here :) ........no i can`t browse webpages....i can`t do anything on the web ...yes by AP i mean accespoint (wireless accesspoint - not cable,DSL or anything like it - i`m from yugoslavia and DSL still costs too much and there is no cable in my `hood yet :( )...anyway....i use my AP as a client to connect to my ISP-s AP (which is the same device as mine - DLink 900AP+)....my wireless device is on my roof in a waterproof box :) and it`s connected with my computer with an UTP cable and a ethernet card...(i had to do that this way becose my roof is more than 20 meters from my computer,so i would loose too much of signal even with a most expencive low-loss cable)....anyway....i installed everything and then pinged my device on my roof (ping 10.25.3.233) and everything went ok (0 packets lost blah blah...) so i figured out that my comp is negotiating with my device on my roof over my ethernet card with success....then i pinged my ISP-s AP (ping 10.25.3.246) and everything went ok too (so i know i`m in reach of my ISP-s AP signal).....when i open my "network connections" it says everything`s ok....BUT....i dont understand how do i connect to my ISP-s AP...it requires username and password (like over modem connection with KPPP)...in windoze it works fine......i just dont understand that part...is there some kind of application like KPPP for wireless networking ? ...i know i confused you with all this talk...sorry....but i just don`t get it :)

Do you have to enter a username and password when you're in Windows? I think the username/password are stored on your wireless device (try pointing your browser to the IP of the ISP's AP).
Is the ISP AP your default gateway? Is your ethernet card using DHCP? |
From the dlink web site.
Code:
The DWL-900AP+ can be configured to perform in any one of five modes — as a wireless access point, as a point-to-point bridge with another access point, as a point-to-multi-point wireless bridge, as a wireless client, or as a wireless repeater. The confusion may be mine, not yours ;) |

:) no i dont have a modem...just a ethernet card connected with my DWL-900AP+ (client) ....which is wireless connected to my ISP-s AP :) ....and yes,it uses DHCP... ...i tried pointing my browser to my ISP-a AP and it prompts me for my username/password but when i enter them (same username/password i`m using in windows) it won`t accept it :( ....here is how it looks like in win : picture 1. http://www.fuckass.org/~histerix/connect.jpg picture 2. http://www.fuckass.org/~histerix/networkconns.jpg picture 3. http://www.fuckass.org/~histerix/details.jpg i know this doesn`t help much...but if you have any clue what`s going on.... :) ....anyway thank you guys for all this ;) |
Hmm, I don't have much experience with PPPoE, but you could try here: http://www.ecf.toronto.edu/~stras/pppoe.html
|
I have never used ppoe. I think Fedora has an internet connection wizard which will help you set it up.
|
guys thnx alot once more...my fedora`s on the net finnaly...i used rp-pppoe (made for DSL actually :) ) and configured everything (nameserver etc...) and it WORKS :) ....thnx for all the help once again...u putted me on the right direction (i can be hard pain in the...sometimes) ;)
