can't enable wlan on acer laptop
 

hi,
I have an acer aspire 3023wlmi with ubuntu 5.10 installed and can't get my wlan button to work.
So far i've installed ndiswrapper and successfully loaded the driver and everything.
But my wireless network won't activate until i figure out how to use the software button.
I have installed acerhk and set the keycodes for my media buttons, but i can't find the right keycode to use for the wireless button.
If someone knows another way of making it work or by making the wireless active at startup, please let me know.

After you get ndiswrapper installed, in Gnome go to System, Administration, then networking, click on the WiFi connection and then "Activate", if you have an external light to so show your Wlan connection it should turn on at this point (Mine is blue and its just above the button that toggles mine on/off). After that, just make it your default connection, add ndiswrapper to your modules. I even went as far as to adding ndiswrapper to hotplug for safety because I'm horrible at bumping my button and shutting my wifi off.

I've tried activating it that way numerous times but it doesn't do anything, de led doesn't go on either.
I also tried the wlan button software thats listed on the acerhk site but that doesn't seem to work.

I too have an Acer laptop; 3502 with an Atheros wlan chipset 5211, after trying 15 different distros,I tried Troppix Live the thing worked after a 4 click install routine........with a Live CD......

Only managed to get this chipset working on 4 of the other 15 distros.

Might want to try this distro, but be warned it seems to be dis-continued after the latest release Nov 22nd........may have to start a remaster of this distro.

Anybody know why it got discontinued?

I installed 1.1 on my nicklock switched hard drive, and though it doesn't have the exact packages I want for a minimal distro... I love how fast it boots and how fast is shuts down.

It's the only distro that I've found that can boot extremely fast, yet detect all the hardware (except for the 3 menu's for keyboard, video driver, and resolution you have to set at each boot).

Ah well... at least I have a copy so I can dig into the boot / shutdown scripts, later.

I have been using the Deb repos. to update Troppix, installing / upgrading gnome etc......nice distro thus far although a lot of the ini scripts are somewhat different from the norm, have not heard why the distro was suddenly stopped though.....

Could you describe that "4 click install routine"?

I'm using Knoppix & an HP/Compaq nc6000 with Atheros controller on the WNIC.

The 4 click routine was done via a GUI within Troppix itself, not from the command line, it is a menu option that starts a terminal window to configure the onboard Atheros chipset
