can't connect to internet on Fedora Core 1

I'm brand new to Linux. I picked up Fedora Core 1 from a book I got at the local library. I can't seem to connect to the internet for the life of me. I have a Realtek RTL8139 network card. I've tried manually inputting the IP Address from the back of my cable modem, but no luck. Please help. I've tried to d/l a linux driver from realtek, but couldn't figure out which one to d/l. In the process of downloading FC 3 iso's on another pc. Thanks.

Hi!

I have the exact same network card connecting to an ADSL router/modem and it works just fine. Is your etc/resolv.conf setup? What do you have in /etc/sysconfig/network (at least on Rh9). It must be something like:

NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=StefanLinux
GATEWAYDEV=eth0
GATEWAY=196.254.255.100
FORWARD_IPV4=yes

where GATEWAY is the address of your router/modem (I am assuming you have ADSL?)

Plus your resolv.conf must be correctly setup with your ISP's nameservers' addresses.

You musn't input the IP address from your cable modem as your machine's IP address - this will cause an IP address conflict. You must choose an IP address for your machine that is in the same IP range as the cable modem (i. e. if your modem is at 196.254.255.100, you can, for example, make your FC1 machine 196.254.255.17) and then edit /etc/sysconfig/network and make sure there is a GATEWAY line that says the cable modem's IP, NOT your machine's IP, which -must- be different from the modem's ip.

Hope this helped!

First, Welcome to LQ!

If the post above doesn't work, try the commands:
Code:
insmod 8139too
ifconfig eth0 up
as superuser. Post back if you get errors and I can try to guide you through it.
