Backtrack and belkin wireless g desktop card
 

hi guy im new to linux, and just for some background info, i have a pc with win xp media center that i custom built, and i got hacked. ok then i was doing research and im learning alot about networking and am looking for somthing in network security when i finish high school. yes im a 15 year old. so i got this live CD of Backtrack 2.0 and i have been getting pissed off at how it does think i have a wireless card. point of the matter is, how cani get this card to work, oh yea its a belkin desktop wireless g card, version 7000. I also dont really know about commands or in the linux world kernels? yea...um if anyone can piont me to where i can find what info i need or simply tell me i would be very gratefull.

No seriously, this is way to vague dude. Get some more info and try stuff out on your own. For all I know your card could be up and running and will just need the essid etc. So unless you know a bit more about your problem and you searched for it yourself I don't think anyone can help you. For starters check your device's chipset and then google to see if it is linux-compliant. If not ndiswrapper will be your only choice so you can start googling ndiswrapper.

ok man, idk if i said this or not but im a total n000000b at linux, and was hoping to only use once in a while. the thing is I don't know any commands to test if my stuff is up! when i try to run kismet or any other program it says device not found or something like that. googling for sure, but a little help would be appreciated. thanks for the ndiswrapper. will be getting real familiar with it.

Ah, newbies, been there - but actually the t-shirt wore out a while back. Anyway, time to do a little command line magic.

Open a terminal and enter these two commands (let the machine respond to each, of course):

Post the results here. I'm not all that familiar with your distro, so you may need to precede each command with "sudo", or run as root using the "su -" command. The "-" is very important, by the way.

the same problem with me here

My Asus P5GD2 Premium onboard wifi-g has a Marvell (Libertas) chipset too and I could get it to work only with ndiswrapper using the assus-supplied 64bits windows driver (my system is 64bit). Of course you could miss out on some features (like hosting an AP, which is possible with my chip)

Which distro are you using?
Is ndiswrapper installed? Have you tried it?
