Auto Hot spot client
I want to make a small box with linux running the smallest linux os available. that will seek for available unsecure wireless networks and automatically connect to them and provide internet thru the lan port. basically a auto client. any Ideas. OR if it already exists thats fine

The first thing that pops to mind would be Damn Small Linux, running something like SWScanner. But SWScanner is only useful for wardriving, so if you mean a stationary box, then you may as well just make sure it supports your card, and has a standard wireless scanner.
However, correct me if I am wrong, but connecting to networks that are not your own can be considered illegal, if they chose to press charges. As for allowing internet through the LAN on it, that, I don't know. |
It is not for war driving it is for truck drivers and RV'ers that want to mount a external antenna and when they pull in to a campground or truckstop and fire up thier little linux box it auto connects to what is available

Now if you are using the AP to gain access to secured or personal data then you are most likely to get into some trouble. Or too use the AP to gain or acquire data that is copyrighted would be considered illegal. I'm not an attorney! But the U.S. and with transmission of signal across/trough air space has been challenged my times. If the signal is protected/encrypted the user can break the signal. It is what is done with the signal after that which can be defined as legal or illegal. |
