Atheros & Suse 9.2
 

I know there is lot of threats about this but my problem is a little particular.

I am using the Suse 9.2 (free edition) with the 2.6.8-24.14 kernel.
I am trying to monitor the wireless network with the pci ar5212 Atheros. Using ndiswrapper the windoz driver do not allow my to go into monitor mode.
alternatibly i am trying unsuscesfully to use the madwifi driver ( "modprobe ath_pci" ). before executing the command i do stop the eth0 "ifdown eth0". But the wireless interface is not detected.

I manually added and IP to the wlan0 interface.

The madwifi should work...

I got it to work perfectly (well close enough) through YAST.

When I setup the wifi card (a built in atheros AR5212 using module ath_pci) I had to use 128 shared key (rather then WPA-PSK which is what I wanted.).

This absulutely works.. I'm typing to you from the laptop using the above drivers/chipsets on a suse 9.2 install..

Your WAP (wireless access point) needs to be set up to use 128 bit (hex) shared key..
I couldn't get it to work with WPA-PSK wich is what my entire network is normally on. but I changed the WAP to 128 shared no WPA-PSK and all works perfect (though not anywhere near as secure.)

I'm running a Fujitsu LifeBook (n5010) for any interested .. Everything in Suse 9.2 works on this machine..
Albiet the (SHYT ATI) radeon mobile 9600 drivers, shut off the display if you leave x once you have logged into an X session of any kind.. but it's livable.. (UT2k4 runs as good if not better on this machine with linux rather then xp BTW!)

I have Suse 9.2 Pro installed on my Toshiba A45 laptop and it has a Atheros Wifi card and Suse configured and installed the drivers for it right out of the box. You could try that and see if that helps. I did try the Suse 9.1 personal and that saw the wifi card and installed it as well so you could give that a try.
