Atheros and suse

Hi, I'm trying to install atheros wireless lan card but there seems to be something wrong either with my setup of suse (minimal via netinstall) or in somewhere else.

Ok Im going to post some command outputs to keep this simple.

This is what lspci shows:

Code:

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133] (rev 03)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133 AGP]
00:07.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super South] (rev 40)
00:07.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:07.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 16)
00:07.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 16)
00:07.4 Bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super ACPI] (rev 40)
00:09.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado] (rev 78)
00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 02)
00:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006X 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

Notice that its the Atheros card (second last). It shows also in yast network manager.

But ifconfig nor iwconfig shows it. ifconfig shows just the eth0.

I have installed madwifi-kmp-default.

And the only thing left to mention (I think) is a strange thing that wlanconfig gives odd error like this:
Code:

wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta
wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device

what am I missing?

Thanks for reading through.

Sorry I dont know what does it mean to have Firmware installed?

2Gnu 03-15-2007 10:58 AM

Sorry. No firmware needed for MadWiFi. Don't know what I was thinking.

Check for the other requirements, though. Here's the complete list: http://madwifi.org/wiki/Requirements

jaristr 03-16-2007 07:19 AM

Thanks. Other than the Kernel things I should have everything. How can you tell what your kernel supports and what not?

jaristr 03-16-2007 07:56 AM

Ok I just found out how to check them and it turns out that the kernel supports CONFIG_MODVERSIONS when it should NOT support it. Hmm, is it possible to somehow disable that CONFIG_MODVERSIONS?

2Gnu 03-16-2007 10:12 AM

You can disable it by recompiling the kernel. Not hard, but can be intimidating if you haven't done it before.

Do you get an error when you modprobe ath_pci?

Ok... :) modprobe ath_pci gives no error.

2Gnu 03-17-2007 11:35 PM

Is ath0 showing up now? Maybe all you needed to do is load the module.

Oh no, it never has... Hmm I think that some one already adviced to load the module but I cannot recall how that was done?
So I am not sure if I have done that.

2Gnu 03-18-2007 09:45 AM

modprobe ath_pci is "loading the module"

jaristr 03-18-2007 11:41 AM

Well in that case. :) Looks like I have done everything possible?

2Gnu 03-18-2007 08:13 PM

Look in dmesg or your syslog to see if there are any clues about what is happening.

jaristr 03-19-2007 06:56 AM

Thanks. Looks like there is some hardware self test failure wifi but other than that I cant tell well the problem is. Here's the whole output:
