An Ideal Wireless Card for Slackware 10.0 running 2.6.10
 

Hi-
I am planning on buying a wireless card (well another one. I have a Belkin F5D6020 version 1. It works fine on Windows but I can't get it to work on Linux. There's no documentation :().
I have a couple of bits of criteria and I wanted some advice regarding which wireless cards to purchase.
1. I want to buy a wireless card that's not more than 50 dollars.
2. I also want it to be easy to install in Linux, i.e. a lot of documentation or even better if it was built into the 2.6.10 kernel.
3. It needs to be PCMCIA or Carbus
Any recommendations? What is everyone having good luck with?

The best wireless cards are the orinoco cards or any card using the orinoco chipset which go under the name proxim and lucent for the most part. The cards should work right outta the box using the orinoco_cs module. You can also get a pigtail antenna for it to increase range. I have had the best success with these cards although don't get a combo chipset like a/b or b/g as they tend not to like linux as much

What type of chipset should I get then B or G? All I would need to do is configure my kernel and build in the oronico driver? Do you know what that's under?

I would go with the B cards, and all you have to do is build them into the kernel and they will work. It should be under device drivers in your kernel configuration

That's the right card - a 5V, 16-bit PCMCIA card. Hermes chipset. Thoroughly compatible with Linux by virtue of the orinoco_cs driver, included in the kernel since 2.4.3. Monitor mode requires a patch; versions are available on the driver author's website as well as on Kismetwireless.net.
