On this page, there is a bunch of VPS hosting companies.
My goal is only to install a few services like mail, Apache, MariaDB, WordPress, OwnCloud, ... But nothing professional, just to give it a try in running a VPS and have it configured.
Any advice?
My opinion, as that is all you're going to get here; is we either are the administrator or should pay one.
I'm guessing a VPS would be good if you're running a small device? I use a VPN, free in Linux from ProtonMail...
when I feel the need for my tinfoil hat that is.

There's nothing "only" about that list.
You have some work cut out for you. You can practice locally in a virtual machine, no need to get a "free" server.
Owncloud/Nextcloud might require a few GB RAM, but the rest can run in any of the free servers you get e.g. from the likes of AWS, Azure and Google. They give you a monthly budget you can use for a year or a few months at least. As a bonus, you learn some cloud administration. Why not set up servers in all three?
Trying several is a good idea. Many will give a trial period, though in recent years these periods have been less and less generous.
Maybe swap in Scaleway or Linode in place of Azure. Azure is dodgy in several ways, not just with the SEC complaints. I'd really try to avoid Azure, but otherwise agree with the advice to try out a few.
The man got contacted by Canonical as soon as he installed Ubuntu 18.04? This is just what I need, I'm going to run Ubuntu 18.04 on Azure. And Ubuntu 20.04, 16.04, 14.04, CentOs7.04, CentOs8.04, ...
Open Telekom Cloud from Deutsche Telekom also has a trial (and they use OpenStack). I suppose many others do, or you just splurge 5$ a month on Linode or so.

For what I need to do, maybe I should start with free VPS'. If they mine my account, at most they'll find an almost empty WordPress website, and an unused mailbox...
But it's several times I hear about Linode, if I feel like making a serious use of these services, maybe I'll give it a try
I do appreciate the information concerning VPS (free and almost free). The link by the OP in post # 1 was enlightening and very informative. It is probably the best article on (free and almost free) VPS that I have read.
I would like to point out the caveat within the article.
