Lightbulb Which VPS hosting?

On this page, there is a bunch of VPS hosting companies.
My goal is only to install a few services like mail, Apache, MariaDB, WordPress, OwnCloud, ... But nothing professional, just to give it a try in running a VPS and have it configured.
Any advice?

My opinion, as that is all you're going to get here; is we either are the administrator or should pay one.

I'm guessing a VPS would be good if you're running a small device? I use a VPN, free in Linux from ProtonMail...
when I feel the need for my tinfoil hat that is.

There's nothing "only" about that list.
You have some work cut out for you. You can practice locally in a virtual machine, no need to get a "free" server.

Well, I'm in antennas but there won't a job for me when I finish my studies... It's still time to learn a bit about computers

Understood

In the sense that nobody will use these services

It was to connect from my mobile or other places, to see if it all goes well. Working in a VM is a bit frustrating...

Owncloud/Nextcloud might require a few GB RAM, but the rest can run in any of the free servers you get e.g. from the likes of AWS, Azure and Google. They give you a monthly budget you can use for a year or a few months at least. As a bonus, you learn some cloud administration. Why not set up servers in all three?

Good idea, cloud knowledge seems indispensable and redo the configuration several times is the best way to remember. Thank you for the advice

Trying several is a good idea. Many will give a trial period, though in recent years these periods have been less and less generous.

Maybe swap in Scaleway or Linode in place of Azure. Azure is dodgy in several ways, not just with the SEC complaints. I'd really try to avoid Azure, but otherwise agree with the advice to try out a few.

The man got contacted by Canonical as soon as he installed Ubuntu 18.04? This is just what I need, I'm going to run Ubuntu 18.04 on Azure. And Ubuntu 20.04, 16.04, 14.04, CentOs7.04, CentOs8.04, ...

Canonical or more likely a microsofter embedded inside Canonical. That has become a problem these days in many companies.

Open Telekom Cloud from Deutsche Telekom also has a trial (and they use OpenStack). I suppose many others do, or you just splurge 5$ a month on Linode or so.

For what I need to do, maybe I should start with free VPS'. If they mine my account, at most they'll find an almost empty WordPress website, and an unused mailbox...
But it's several times I hear about Linode, if I feel like making a serious use of these services, maybe I'll give it a try

I do appreciate the information concerning VPS (free and almost free). The link by the OP in post # 1 was enlightening and very informative. It is probably the best article on (free and almost free) VPS that I have read.

The link to the article by "Hosting Advice, Ms. Laura Bernheim: https://www.hostingadvice.com/how-to/free-vps-hosting/

I would like to point out the caveat within the article.

Quote:
Occasionally, legit hosts will dangle a free VPS hosting service offer in the hopes of generating leads for premium services. Usually, though, you get what you pay for — a whole lot of nothing.

Whichever route you choose, be especially cautious with sharing your personal data or payment information. Even though you can strike gold, free VPS hosting is largely considered a scam.

The companies, usually headquartered overseas, often collect your contact information to sell to other companies — all while insisting they’re processing your request. We’ve done our best to verify the hosts listed below are legit, though, so good luck on your quest!
One last recommendation. After the article, there is a "Discussion" area with 18 comments. Some of the comments are worth noting if you are serious about a 'free' VPS.

With Protonmails free virtual networks, there's only a few free channels and they're bogged down like crazy so often cut out.

Not the same I know: https://www.liquidweb.com/blog/vps-vs-vpn/

... VPN ALTERNATIVES
If you need a VPN, there are three main options: using a free service, a paid one or setting up your own VPN server.

Free services are a bad idea because they are not really secure and have serious limitations, we have already detailed why you should avoid ...

... GETTING YOUR VPS SERVER
Make sure you have a VPS you can run your VPN service on. You can get the best service quality for the lowest price ...

INSTALLING OPENVPN ...
Tangentially, with free software we don't get what we pay for... we get what we don't pay for... blood, sweat and tears?
