What did VMware do to the VMware Tools gui on Windows guests?
 

I have VMware player 5.0.2 running on CentOS 6.4. I have a couple of Windows XP guests built for testing and other occasional use. Today I wanted to shrink the disk on one of them. For the past many years I would simply double click on the VM icon in the system tray and that would bring up the Tools gui to allow me to perform various functions. Now it only brings up an About screen telling me I am running VMware Tools for Windows 9.2.3.

I have reinstalled VMware Tools, removed and installed VMware Tools and still no go. The documentation tells me to double click on the icon as described above or to go to Control Panel and double click on VMware Tools. Control Panel contains no entry for VMware.

On Linux guests I can type vmware-toolbox in a terminal. Windows does not contain a "vmware-toolbox" executable.

Any suggestions???

I did some more searching. It seems that VMware removed the gui control panel intentionally. The commandline replacement is located in C:\Program Files\Vmware\Vmware Tools (which of course is not added to the path). The executable is vmwaretoolboxcmd.exe. The command for shrinking the disk seems to be Ken

I wonder what this question has to do with Linux or opensource virtualization

Enough that you and more than a hundred other folks have looked at the thread :D I run my virtual machines from a Linux host and the tools were installed from VMware player running on Linux so I think it is fair game.
