VMWare Tools copy/paste between host and guest issues
 

I just built a couple of Xubuntu guests (10.04 and 11.04) on my Ubuntu 10.04 host using VMWare Player 3.1.4. VMWare tools installed automagically. I find that I am unable to copy and paste files from the host to the guests as I have been able to do on about every other OS I have installed as a guest. Can anyone tell me if this is just an XFCE oddity or limitation? It would not be the first of either which I have experienced with XFCE :(

More interesting - and alarming for that matter - is this behavior...

I tried dragging a subdirectory from Nautilus on the Ubuntu host to the desktop (and also to my home folder opened in thunar) on the Xubuntu guests. Nothing happened on the guests. However, the subdirectory I dragged DISAPPEARED on the host!

I tried this drag and drop to the following guests. It did not work. Then again, the original subdirectory did not disappear.

Ubuntu 10.04
Windows 7
Linux Mint 11
Windows XP

Has anyone any experience/insight into what is going on with Xubuntu and VMWare?

Well, you had to install the tools, they are not automagically by default.

Download and install the latest tools usually fixes until you update the kernel again.

I guess it is possible that your drag failed and dropped it someplace else. The only problem I have seen is that the cut doesn't cut but it acts like a copy instead.

Thanks jefro but I must beg to differ re. VMWare tools. The automatic VM build process (i.e. not the "I will install the operating system later" option) does in fact install the tools. At least in Ubuntu and derivatives and CentOS. I think it does in Windows as well but I have not built a Windows VM in quite a while. That said, on the Xubutu VMs I checked under the "Virtual Machine" menu and Reinstall VMWare Tools was displayed, not Install VMWare Tools.

Just for the halibut I just reinstall tools on one of the Xubuntu VMs. I can copy FROM the VM to the host (don't recall if I could before - don't think I tried) but I still cannot copy TO the VM. At least now if I try to drag something to the VM it does not disappear.

Well Xfce is about 0 for 5 of the things I have been testing. I like the simple interface but too many things do not work. I guess I will stick with plain Ubuntu until Canonical breaks one to many thing which had been working fine. Then I think I will move to CentOS or Scientific Linux.

p.s. Based on your commentI decided to search my hard drives for the "missing" files. I found them copied under a folder of Full Circle Magazine issues and another copy under a folder of Manuals and Catalogs (I had restored from a backup archive after they went AWOL). Both of these subdirectories are child directories of the directory where I dragged the collection of files from. Oh well, the lost are found.
