Hi Ztcoracat.
Will run memtest tonight.

However the dram timing control had grayed out parts in bios after unsuccessful bios flash,

slot 1 reads 5-5-5-18-24
slot 2 reads 6-3-4-3-3/5
slot 3 reads 1-2-2-7.8us-1

This config is not the configuration i had previously.

Also the ACPI APIC Support is unavailable, and the ACPI suspend type only showing s1-s3.
Is this down to bad bios flash.

thanks again.

Let us know if Memtest passes.

A bad bios flash is never good.
I hope you went to your computers manufacturer for the exact BIOS Flash for your machine.

memtest

Hi Ztcoracat
Sorry it took a bit of time to post.
The memtest ran ok on a standard test, but trying to probe the memory all i get is a page of broken colours. and wont complete.

And i did get the correct bios update from manufacturer.

And when i change any bios settings the cmos needs resetting and it will not accept any settings but those allready installed on the bios.

thanks mad11

That's good that Memtest passed.

A page of broken colors could mean that it's graphic card related.

How old is the computer?

The command that you can run in the terminal for memory is:
Code:

Are there other settings besides the ones already installed in the BIOS?

Depending on the age of the computer changing the cmos battery might help.
Here's the instructions for a desktop-
Code:
Unplug all cables except for the power. ...
Unplug the power cable and with the power cable removed press the Power button on the front of the PC. ...
Remove the screws on the rear of the PC.
Slide the side panel off from the rear of the PC.
    Locate the battery. ...
Remember which direction the battery is installed.

The drive is connected via sata cable and the drive does show as dev/sda if this helps explain your question.
You mentioned that you can't get to what's behind it.
Can you give more details on that?

What's the extended partition attatched to?
The distro or an xbox360?

If your suspicious that the cpu is overheating you can run these commands to dx things.

Thats the thing the Extended partition is in bios settings and cannot be removed via bios settings. Every time i try to change it i only have the extended option and none option.

I have tried to set different settings (LOWEST OPTION FOR EACH SECTION) but only get F1 error, which loops me back to the installed settings. And cannot get past this.

As to the battery yes it good 1.3v.

The graphics issue is i assume (mother of all mistakes)is all part of the loop i get pushed into via bios settings which wont let me see desktop,

The memtest running and passing apart from probe problem i am still not sure if the memtest is starting at the right point.

I will post back tomorrow with logs for processor output.

Thanks again for your patience

Any extended partition should not be in the BIOS.
There's something very wrong with that.

What exactly did your friend do with your computer?

Hi Ztcoracat.
Made a bit of headway now lol. It seems i am running in a LVM volume group.
I have run a few commands to gather more info on this. Their is also the netbios not being the correct host name.Which will help complicate things.

I used these web pages for info on LVM

I'm sorry mad11 I don't have experience with LVM.

I did read through the txt.file that you posted and I see that you have 2 partitions and a swap.

Code:
/dev/sda1: UUID="e6202889-ed9d-429d-bf94-89cd665eacb4" TYPE="ext2"
/dev/sda5: UUID="xjgQFT-fRFb-B7d1-HtxE-dQ5b-DUAM-63lNO0" TYPE="LVM2_member"
/dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root: UUID="bcaccaaf-2a3c-496b-a899-dde1d2c2b0ea" TYPE="ext4"
€ubuntu--vg-swap_1 (dm-1) 252:1 0 6G 0 lvm
Can you boot into your distro now?

Yeah not having the correct host name is most likely a problem.
Maybe jefro can help you fix that; I don't have experience in that area.

Hi Ztcoracat.
I have tried the recommended fix from these links (http://wellsie.net/p/313/

http://askubuntu.com/questions/22813...stalling-12-04)

Still no joy have had to reinstall i removed all partitions from drive as suggested in the links, with sfdisk. And was left with a non-boot-able system (Grub repair would not give me any info to get the system to boot as i dont have the knowledge to repair from grub, i did try to get usable info but grub would`nt play ball). When i restart the system i have to reset bios to get it to boot.

I have put ubuntu 14.04 back on and will keep trying to fix it.

How do i contact jefro to see if he can assist.

Thanks Ztcoracat.

I don't really know what is what right now on this thread.

Let me phrase what I have.

You have a host computer.
It runs a virtual machine program.
You somehow created or installed a client OS to the vm.

Are you saying that your client OS is not booting or your host OS is not booting?

more info

hello jefro
As i have said in previous posts i have a extended partion being created on my computer the issue seems to arise from overlapping partitions on my hard drive with conflicting head and cylinder-sector counts.

I never left any vm machine or os on my comp (although i have used one before it was always removed without incident.)

Only the vm host boots as i have said my bios shows my hard drive as a extended drive not set by me and cannot change it as i will not boot if i try to change this.

If you boot to some live media like a cd,dvd or usb of some modern linux and you run drive tools on it and it says something to the effect of overlapping partitions then there is little that can be done. You might try to get data off with some tool like testdisk. It isn't easy to fix overlapping partitions that I know of. Ranish at one time was able to guess. Not sure if that tool has been updated.

Now to that reason that you have overlapping partitions is another issue. At one time there was a bug in fdisk that caused this. I guess it is possible to mount a physical drive under a vm and cause this. You should avoid mounting physical disks to a virtual machine. It may be possible that some conflict exists with bios. Some drives were too large for the bios to access and they created a scheme to bypass the limits of bios. If that is what you have then linux won't be of much help. It won't see past the point where bios can access and you might not even be able to use a too large of drive for the bios. Many hard drives have a jumper to limit CHS that can let you use the drive as a lower size.

I'd get the important data off to a remote storage and reload the entire deal.

More info

Hi jefro.
I will give ranish a try and see if it helps.

"Any extended partition should not be in the BIOS.
There's something very wrong with that." Quote from Ztcoracat.

Their is also this problem of not being able to see my true bios screen. As when i boot from c.d. or hdd. I continually see DRM nouveau 0000:01:00:0: no native mode forcing panel scaling. With VESA Kernel modesetting driver in use.with no edid for dvi -1 -1

With errors [284.417577] i2c i2c-1 sendbytes:nak:bailout.

This is all part of the same issue i have been trying to remove issue from hdd drive. But the graffix issue may be what is stopping me from seeing true bios screen And their for stops me repairing the system.

Thanks again. mad11
