If LXC is important perhaps consider Proxmox. Proxmox is free/libre and provides a convenient web browser interface to configure LXC containers (and KVMs). I use Proxmox at work.

I've gone with qemu/kvm to implement the two VM's

Discarded the other options for the following reasons:
  • Virtualbox : this is propriety (Oracle) product and its future is uncertain
  • LXC / LXD : especially with LXD there is a dependency on systemd, and my distro is Devuan ...

After a few hiccups (I had to revert some packages back to their versions in STABLE (ascii2)) did as follows:
  1. (install packages): sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm libvirt-clients libvirt-daemon-system virt-manager virt-viewer
  2. (enable user access): sudo adduser $USER libvirt
  3. (create VM's): using virtual machine manager, and a qcow2 image of a basic Devuan-installation (kindly done by someone else

...and (so far) everything is working as expected ...

Thanks all for your input

I'll report back here with any caveats or insights ...

Were I you I would not reply back here. You have successfully come to a conclusion about what to run your environments in, so I would make this one closed and marked SOLVED. I would open a new one for any issues or complications, and refer back to this one as needed.

BTW: very glad you came to a solution, and wish you the best of luck.
