Virtual File Server Help

Hi all.

I have an esxi 4.1 host with an Ubuntu server 10.10 guest running as a file server. For storage, I'm using 2x 1TB usb drives (I know its not the fastest but this is my home rig) presented to the VM, one as master, shared via Samba, and the other as a backup device sync'd via a simple rsync script.

My question is, understanding that my main bottleneck is usb, are there any tweaks I can use to optimize this configuration? Would reformatting the drives using ext3/4, or another filesystem help? Currently the data is sitting on the stock NTFS partitions.

My thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

Ps. I apologize for any spelling issues as I'm using the Android app to post while mobile

Not solved

For some reason the Android app automatically selected the solved option for a new thread. This is not actually solved.
