I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on VMWare Player 4.02. I changed Ubuntu back to the classic desktop by installing
Quote:
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
I then login with "GNOME Classic" or "GNOME Classic no effects". I am unable to grab the corner of a window to resize it. In the no effects mode I see the corner arrow symbol when I hover over a corner. However, I cannot grab the corner - the symbol disappears when I left click. On the GNOME Classic (with effects I guess) I do not even see the corner symbol. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on an old physical box and I do not see the issue so I am guessing it is VMWare related.
As over 400 folks have peeked at this post I thought I would update it with a reply although I should just edit and add a p.s.
I just received a notice that Player 4.0.3 is available. I downloaded it and installed it. The issue is the same. ONLY the Ubuntu interface (not Classic, Classic no effects nor Ubuntu 2D) allows me to resize a window. I enabled 3D Acceleration in the VM configuration (this has CAUSED issues with Win 7 VMs) but it had no effect.
I guess after enjoying the user friendly Ubuntu product since 6.04 it is time for me to go back to the Red side. I tested the apps that I use in CentOS 6 some months back and got all of them to work. Perhaps it is time to build a CentOS 6.2 physical machine. It is supported until 2020 so I can avoid Canonical's "it works lets change it" philosophy
i have the same issue... i got fedup of ubuntu... i installed linux mint 12 and wow by default it was in full screen in gnome fall back.. it was super smooth...
also i noticed unity is running super slowly while gnome is super fast...
i have x4 quad amd. 2.5ghz
i virtualized it on vmplayer and virtual box
in virtual box its simply superb..
I installed Ubunto 12.04 last week, and this was the first issue I discovered. I have everything up to date with patches for both Ubuntu and VMWare Player. I also reinstalled vmware-tools. I noticed that you can resize windows, but only from the top edge or corners. Resizing from the sides, bottom, or bottom corners does not work.
I discovered today, quite by accident, that if you RIGHT click on the title bar of a window you can select Resize (also available by Alt+F8) the window can be stretched as desired. Still it appears to be a conflict between VMWare and Ubuntu 12.04. I recall a lot of such issues, well actually WORSE issues, when I was testing the alpha and beta releases of 10.04 in VMWare. With each Ubuntu release I would have to wait for VMWare to catch up. I did a little testing of the 12.04 alpha and beta but did not experience such issues. No problem until the official release
I installed Google Chrome browser, and noticed you can resize it as normal from any edge or corner. Still having problems with most other things though.
Hmmm, issue still there, but I can resize after all
After all this time, the issue is still there. I was playing around some more with it after updating vmware player and vmware tools yesterday. Problem is still there, but I noticed you can in fact resize a window if you left click on the correct spot. It is hard to find because the tip of the mouse pointer must be off by a few pixels. You can't trust that the mouse pointer will change when you are hovering in the right place. You need to find the magic spot that is a little to the right of where you would expect it to be. The mouse pointer will not be changed to the one you usually get when resizing a window though. As soon as you click on the correct spot, the mouse pointer will change to the resizing style though and you can resize the window. It's hard to find because of the bug, but it can be done.
