I think there may be two issues here.
One is to create a hard disk when the VM is being set up.
Then second is going to "Storage" and locating the iso file and checking the box that says CD/DVD.

TAILS would not load today, so I had to go back in and tell it to find the iso file again.

This is normal if you eject the 'cd' from the vm.

I don't recall any specific action like that that I was taking.

I had to reload TAILS into the VM. I clicked the tiny blue icon to the right in the storage window and find the iso file. And I keep the CD/DVD box checked.

When I shut TAILS I click "shut down immediately."

This time TAILS loaded up again automatically, so I think this problem could be considered solved. It may be those configurations that do it.
