Open-source USB support for VirtualBox?

Someone did this so it is possible. It was project "virtualbox-ose-usb":

Quote:
support USB Device in VirtualBox OSE (Open Source Edition). VirtualBox OSE does not have virtual usb host controller, usb root hub, and usb device, this project uses qemu code as a reference to create the basic virtual devices.
But source code is not available any more.

Do other open-source solutions for USB support on VirtualBox exist, if one may not use the closed-source USB support VirtualBox comes with?

I doubt you'll find one. Never heard of any work on it.
There are other VM solutions.

"Before version 4.0, there were two editions of VirtualBox: a full binary containing all features and an "Open Source Edition" (OSE) with source code. With version 4.0, there is only one version any more, which is open source, and the closed-source components have been moved to a separate extension pack. "
